The Elm Tree, Shop Lane, Langton Herring DT3 4HU

LOCATION:

The Elm Tree is easily located, and is situated just a few miles west of Weymouth along the B3157 towards Bridport. The village and pub are signposted from the main road.

The Pub

The Elm Tree is an excellent example of a locals/destination restaurant offering high quality food and wines and is famous throughout the area.  Built in the 16th century this pub is full of character and history with its inglenook, flagstoned floor and lots of old beams.  Also being next to the coast it has more than its fair share of smugglers tales!  A bricked up hole in the cellar is said to be an escape tunnel or a hiding place for contraband.

During its more recent history it was a meeting place for KGB spies and there are rumours that it was used by Barnes Wallace whilst testing his bouncing bombs in the Fleet which is Britains largest lagoon and is situated alongside Langton Herring. The pub is so named after a large elm tree that once grew there but was 'blown up by gunpowder,' the reason for which has been lost in history.
